Rome2rio gives travelers a way to decide the best way to get to where they want to go. The application features large, embedded Google Maps so the user can select any destination in the world. The user can also view how long each route will take and compare multiple routes. Rome2rio advises the user when alternate routes are discovered and allows them to view the price so they choose the best option for their needs and budget. Rome2rio searches around 670 airlines, train routes in India, China and Europe, ferry routes and driving directions. The user is given a list of current airfare prices as provided by Kayak.com.

Rome2rio was created by Bernhard Tschirren and Michael Cameron. The pair wanted to create a tool that they themselves wished existed. The founder’s personal travel needs allowed them to create the features included with Rome2rio. The application launched its public beta in April of 2011 and is currently in a beta status.

Rome2rio offers users a variety of options when choosing a route to take and selecting their method of travel. Although there are many websites that include hotel prices, attractions and other details, Rome2rio seems to stay focused on the act of actually getting there. The application also covers all major methods of transportation, including airplane, train, ferry and automobile travel.

The purpose of the Rome2rio website is easy to identify given the enormous Google Maps that are embedded along a large portion of the right hand side. The user can see color lines that depict their journey on the map. Along the left hand side, the user can enter their starting and ending locations. Below the destination entry fields, the user is provided with a list of possible routes and how long they will take.

New visitors are not required to sign up to search for a route on Rome2rio. As soon as the visitor arrives, they can access the map and all other tools currently available on the site. The application does not currently offer a log in option, which still works well given the other features included. Users can obtain a link to share their current routes or share Rome2rio through Twitter and Facebook.

Rome2rio invites all users to try the application for free. There are no subscription fees or other charges for doing so. Of course the application is still in beta, so this could change eventually, however that is doubtful unless additional functions are added. For now, Rome2rio offers users an excellent value for the free price.

Rome2rio is a great tool for anyone who is making travel plans. Although the application does not offer some of the more sophisticated features of other travel websites, it is very detailed in the way of getting there. Users can check out alternate routes (which could help them save time and money). The user can also link the routes they find to share with others. Overall, Rome2rio offers many helpful functions that can help internet users plan their next trip more effectively.
